Italian / French Coastline
// October 31st, 2010 // No Comments » // Europe 2010
Sadly we left Rome, probably a day early looking back as there was still a lot to see and do. But, the same can be said for the rest of our trip, so on we go.
We decided to venture up the west coast of Italy via train as it meanders around the cliffs overlooking the ocean beautifully. A very pretty train ride.
Our destination was Genova – right at the top of the peninsula before heading back down towards the French border.

Rome wasn’t seen in a day
// October 30th, 2010 // 2 Comments » // Europe 2010
Our hotel, Hotel IQ was sensational. It was brand new, right in the nice par of the city, not too close to the main attractions but close enough you could walk to them all. Perfect. Highly recommended and good value. For Rome anyway.
Rome is one of the most visited cities in the world each year and for good reason, there’s a ridiculous amount of stuff to see. Even seeing the major stuff that is somewhat cliched these days will take you a good 3-4 days depending on quickly you’d like to see them.

Romania to Rome
// October 28th, 2010 // 1 Comment » // Europe 2010
As we boarded our plane bound for Rome, we couldn’t help but think that our time in Romania went all too fast.
Our last night & day were very enjoyable. We arrived at our hotel in the heart of Bucharest where we found it to be extremely old and let’s just say, the internals were authentic to when the hotel was built. This included such “features” as climbing 2 flights of stairs to get to the lift which you had to open the outside door, then 2 internal doors and even then, only 3 very close friends could fit. We were on the 5th floor, but the lift only went to the 4th. Of course. But it was central, cheap & clean – we didn’t care.
The Transfagarasan – AKA the best road in the world

For a bit of an ignoramus regarding Romania, I didn’t know much about the country at all until we decided to volunteer over there. Yeah, we all know about the gypsies, Nadia the gymnast and Dracula – but I think for most of us, that’s about it.
Well it was, until Top Gear, the most watched car show in the world, visited Romania and introduced us to a few more special places and experiences Romania has to offer. And when a car show such as this boasts that Romania also has the best road in the world – it’s safe to say that if you’re a car enthusiast and in the area, you’d want to see for yourself.
Haven’t seen the episode? I’d highly suggest watching it…
Sorry for the lack of updates…

We had a crazy busy weekend where we did all kinds of stuff. It needs some real time to detail it as it was one of our best weekends in a long, long time.
We said a very sad goodbye to our host family and we’re currently in a hotel in Bucharest, Romania’s capital. We intend to fly out Tuesday night to Rome if things go to plan.
Hopefully we’ll get some time tomorrow to post some more.
Leaving a bit early…
// October 23rd, 2010 // 2 Comments » // Europe 2010
We’ve made a pretty tough decision to leave our volunteering placement a bit early. We were due to finish on Friday and fly out Saturday, but with Glen sick (again, different this time) and Deb feeling a bit similar, we think this is the best option.

Brasov, 18-21 October 2010
// October 22nd, 2010 // No Comments » // Europe 2010
We haven’t done a whole heap this week thus far hence the lack of updates recently… I (Glen) went to see a football (soccer) game between FC Brasov and Croaiva Uni on Monday night which was very interesting. Sadly Brasov lost 3-0, but it was still a really enjoyable game/experience.
Deb’s placement @ the hospital
// October 22nd, 2010 // No Comments » // Europe 2010
Hello everyone! This is Deb…So a bit about my placement….I work at Sacele Hospital which is about an hour away from where I live by the time I have caught 2 buses. It is quite a nice drive – my loved ones keep me company on the way to work by texting me. My bus is about a 10 minute walk from our house and I catch the number 23 at 0820.

Road trip – Cluj, Romania – day 2
// October 21st, 2010 // No Comments » // Europe 2010
After a pretty crap buffet breakfast, we headed off to the botanic gardens in Cluj to try and find some of these painted park benches Larissa was keen to find. Upon getting there, we noticed that most of the benches were in fact new. Still, being the highly cultural people we are(n’t), we thought we’d look around and take it all in.

Me to Romanian guy, “what does ‘stii’ mean in English?”
“you know”,
“no I don’t know, that’s why I’m asking”.
“you… know…”,
“no, seriously I don’t”.
“stii means ‘you know’ “.
“oohhhhhh”.
Feel dumb much?
